Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was combing his hair with an iron comb in the room, a companion began to peep inside. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If I had known that you were peeping, I would have stood up and poked this comb into your eye. Permission to enter has been enjoined only because of the gaze.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2420 to 2422)
When one has already looked without permission, then what need remains for seeking permission? From this hadith, it is derived that if a person peeps into someone’s house and the householder throws something and injures his eye, then the householder will not be liable for any compensation. This is a very severe punishment for spying without permission. Therefore, it is prohibited to look into or enter someone’s house without permission. For this reason, one should enter any non-relative’s house only after seeking permission and offering greetings; this is among the etiquettes of Islam, as is mentioned in the Noble Qur’an: «﴿يَاأَيُّهَاالَّذِينَآمَنُوالَاتَدْخُلُوابُيُوتًاغَيْرَبُيُوتِكُمْحَتَّىتَسْتَأْنِسُواوَتُسَلِّمُواعَلَىأَهْلِهَا ......﴾ [النور : 27]» Translation: “O believers! Do not enter houses other than your own until you have sought permission and greeted those within them.”
