Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever commits suicide with iron, that weapon will be in his hand, which he will continue to thrust into his belly, and he will remain forever in the fire of Hell. And whoever commits suicide by consuming poison, that poison will be in his hand, which he will continue to drink forever in the fire of Hell. And whoever kills himself by falling from a mountain, he will continue to fall forever in the fire of Hell; this will always be his state.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2397 to 2399)
Committing suicide, in any form, is the gravest crime, the punishment for which has been stated in this hadith. How many men and women, overwhelmed by worldly disputes and troubles, commit this crime, which is a grave mistake and despair of Allah’s mercy. May Allah protect everyone from this, Ameen.
Imam Nawawi rahimahullah said: Regarding the perpetual residence in Hell for the one who commits suicide, there are several opinions: One is that what is meant is the person who considers suicide to be lawful and takes his own life through such acts—he is a disbeliever (kafir), and he will remain in Hell forever. The second is that if the one who commits suicide is a Muslim and there is even an atom’s weight of faith (iman) in his heart, then what is meant is that he will remain in Hell for a very long time (after which, by the evidence of «مَنْكَانَفِيْقَلْبِهِمِثْقَالَذَرَّةٍمِنَالْإِيْمَانِ», he will be taken out of Hell after a lengthy period), and this is the grace and favor of Allah—that whoever’s end is upon Islam will not remain in Hell forever.
