Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The oath of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to be like this: «لَاوَمُقَلِّبِالْقُلُوْبِ» No, by the One who turns the hearts «وَاللّٰهُاَعْلَمُبِالصَّوَابِ» .

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2386)
In this hadith, the manner and style of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in taking oaths is described: if the ongoing conversation or statement was not correct, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would first refute it with the initial letter «”لا“», then he would swear by one of Allah’s attributive names. «مقلب القلوب»—the Turner of hearts—is an attributive name (sifat) of Allah. Therefore, it is understood that just as it is permissible to swear by Allah’s personal name (ism dhati), it is also permissible to swear by His attributive names (asma’ sifat), whether that attribute pertains to Allah’s essence, such as knowledge (‘ilm) and power (qudrah), or is an attribute of action (sifat fi‘liyyah), such as subjugation (qahr) and dominance (ghalabah), etc.
