Hadith 2386

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your oath will be according to the meaning upon which your companion (the one with whom you are disputing) considers you to be truthful."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2385)

Imam Nawawi rahimahullah said: The meaning of this hadith is that when a judge or anyone else administers an oath to a person, and he, out of cunning, swears with the intention of saving himself from sin, while actually intending something else, then this deception and equivocation will not benefit him, and the sin of the oath will fall upon him. There is consensus (ijma‘) on this.
