Hadith 2377

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A vow cannot repel anything; it is only by means of it that wealth is extracted from a miserly and stingy person."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2376)

From this hadith, it is understood that divine decree and predestination (qada wa qadar) encompass everything, as is stated in the Divine Word: «﴿إِنَّا كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقْنَاهُ بِقَدَرٍ﴾ [القمر : 49]». Therefore, vows (nadhar) and pledges cannot change or repel this divine decision and predestination; rather, they are merely a consolation for the heart, and through such vows, the miser’s pocket becomes lighter, because a stingy person does not spend without being afflicted by hardship. When calamity strikes, he makes vows. For this reason, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade making vows and considered them disliked (makruh), because it is the practice of the miserly. The generous and God-fearing person always spends in the way of Allah without making vows.

Some scholars have said: The prohibition of vows is in the case where the one making the vow believes that, because of his vow, the predestination will change, or that the calamity decreed in fate will be averted. And if he does not hold such a belief or intention, then making a vow is permissible.

And Allah knows best.
