It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Jews brought a man and a woman who had committed adultery to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What did you use to do with them when one of you committed adultery?" They said: "We do not find any command regarding this in the Torah." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You are lying; the verse of stoning is present in the Torah. If you are truthful, then bring the Torah and read it." So they brought the Torah, and the one who was reading it placed his hand over the verse of stoning. They said: "What is this?" (He lifted his hand) and they saw that it was indeed the verse of stoning. Thus, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered, and they were stoned near the mosque where the funeral biers are placed.
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the companion of the woman leaning over her, trying to protect her from the stones.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2357)
From this hadith, it is understood that issues similar to those in Islamic Shariah were also present in the previous scriptures, but the People of the Book concealed them or altered them. The intention of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was likely that the punishment for a married adulterer and adulteress in Islam is stoning (rajm), and likewise, it is also in the Torah. Thus, it is evident that if the People of the Book also seek judgment, then the decision will be made according to the teachings of Islam. This hadith proves the dishonesty and distortion of the Jews. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Salam (radi Allahu anhu) was also a Jew, but he accepted Islam, and he was a scholar of the Torah; therefore, he exposed the reality (radi Allahu anhu wa ardah).
Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah) said: From this hadith, it is understood that it is obligatory to implement the prescribed punishment (hadd) for adultery upon a disbeliever as well, and the rulings of the branches of religion (furu‘ al-din) are also obligatory upon the disbelievers. Furthermore, when the case of the disbelievers comes before a Muslim, the judgment should be given according to the Shariah. And the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) inquired about the ruling of the Torah from the Jews in order to establish the proof against them, not to follow their practice.
