It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man who had drunk alcohol was brought to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck him with two sticks. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did the same. When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became the Caliph, he consulted the Companions regarding the punishment for the one who drinks alcohol. Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The least prescribed punishment is eighty lashes (in the case of slander)." Thus, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) enforced this.
