Hadith 2309

A man from Banu Abdul Muttalib, Saeed, said: The hadith of Abdullah bin Ali bin Yazid bin Rukanah reached me, and he was in his village, so I went to him and asked him. He said: My father narrated the hadith to me, from his father, that he (Yazid bin Rukanah) gave his wife an irrevocable divorce (batta talaq), and he came to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and mentioned this matter to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "What was your intention?" He replied: I intended to give one divorce. He said: "By Allah, was it only one that you intended?" He replied: By Allah, it was only one that I intended. He said: "Then what you intended is what has taken place." That is, only one divorce has occurred.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadith 2308)

"Batta" refers to three divorces (talaq), because "bat" means to cut off, and after three divorces the marital bond between husband and wife is severed; after this, return (ruju‘) is not possible. After the waiting period (‘iddah) has passed, even a single divorce becomes "batta," but return (ruju‘) is possible through renewal of the marriage contract (tahdīd al-nikah).
