Hadith 2298

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When I was married to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I was six years old. Then we migrated to Medina and stayed with Banu Harith bin Khazraj. There, I got a fever, and because of it, my hair started falling out. Then my hair grew thick up to my shoulders. One day, (my mother) Umm Ruman came while I was playing on a swing with some of my friends. She called me, so I came to her, and I did not know what she intended to do with me. She took my hand and made me stand at the door of the house, and I was out of breath. After a little while, when I calmed down, she took a little water and wiped it over my face and head. Then she took me inside the house, where some women of the Ansar were present. When they saw me, they prayed for me, saying, "May Allah bless you and grant you good fortune." My mother handed me over to them, and they adorned me. After that, in the daytime, suddenly the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me, and those women handed me over to him, and at that time I was nine years old.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2297)

Since Hijaz is a hot region, boys and girls there naturally reach puberty at a very young age. Therefore, it is not surprising that Sayyida Aisha radi Allahu anha was only nine years old at the time of her marriage. Some people express error in this narration by claiming that it was said to be nineteen. This is mere fantasy and creates doubts and suspicions about the ahadith of Bukhari and Muslim, which is a very dangerous matter. In this way, all collections of hadith would become subject to fantasy and doubts.

From this hadith, it is understood that the marriage of a young girl is valid without her permission. Many scholars have consensus (ijma‘) on this: if the father marries off his daughter in her childhood, then after reaching puberty, the girl does not have the right to annul the marriage. Some scholars, however, have said that after puberty, the girl does have the right to annul it. Furthermore, this hadith shows that it is recommended (mustahabb) for the bride to adorn herself. Also, it is permissible for women to gather together and to offer supplications and congratulations. The gathering of people also serves as a public announcement of the marriage. The bride gains reassurance and familiarity with the etiquettes of meeting. Additionally, this hadith also shows that it is permissible for the groom and bride to meet and have conjugal relations during the day.

And Allah knows best.
