Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2287) It is derived from «المصة: مص», which means "to suck," that is, to suck once or twice, meaning to drink a little. And in one narration, it is stated that prohibition (of marriage through breastfeeding) is not established by drinking once or twice. «رضعة» and «املاجة» are also synonymous with «مصة». Their manner is such that when a child takes the mother’s breast into his mouth and sucks, then, without any hindrance, leaves the breast of his own will and pleasure, this is called «رضعة», that is, one instance of drinking or sucking milk. If the child leaves the breast due to some hindrance, such as to take a breath, or to get a little rest, or for something else that distracts him, and then soon starts drinking or sucking again, then in this way, prohibition is not established by drinking once or twice. According to some scholars, prohibition is established by drinking three times; they deduce this from this very hadith. The details will follow.
