Hadith 2287

With this chain also, a narration similar to the previous one is reported from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2285 to 2287)

In view of all these narrations, there is consensus (ijma‘) of the Ummah that milk (breastfeeding) renders (certain relationships) unlawful (for marriage) just as birth does. That is, the woman who breastfeeds becomes the mother of the one who is breastfed, and marriage between them becomes permanently unlawful. The one who was breastfed is permitted to look at her, and seclusion (khalwah) and travel with her are permissible. Other than these, the remaining rulings of (biological) motherhood do not apply; that is, she does not inherit from the boy like a (biological) mother, nor does the boy inherit from her, nor is the maintenance (nafaqah) of one obligatory upon the other like that of a mother, nor is the testimony of the boy rejected concerning her, nor is retribution (qisas) dropped from the foster-mother if she kills the breastfed child.

In short, in these rulings, both are like strangers (ajnabi) to each other. Similarly, there is consensus that the prohibition of marriage extends to the wet nurse (murdi‘ah) and the children of the one breastfed (radi‘), and to the radi‘ in the children of the murdi‘ah. In this ruling, the radi‘ is as if he is the child of the murdi‘ah. And the husband of the murdi‘ah, from whose intercourse this milk was produced—whether the husband is by marriage (nikah) or by right of ownership (milk yamin)—he becomes the father of the radi‘, and his children become the brothers and sisters of the radi‘. The brothers of the murdi‘ah’s husband become the paternal uncles (‘am) of the radi‘, and his sisters become the paternal aunts (phuphi) of the radi‘. And the children of the radi‘ become the children of the murdi‘ah’s husband.
