Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2278 to 2280)
Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Safiyyah radi Allahu anha was the daughter of the Jewish chief Hayy ibn Akhtab in Khaybar. When Khaybar was conquered, she was among the captives. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to his companion Sayyiduna Dihyah al-Kalbi radi Allahu anhu: “Go and choose any slave-girl for yourself.” He went and chose Sayyidah Safiyyah radi Allahu anha.
Another companion came into the noble presence and said: “O Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam! She is the daughter of the chief of the Jews, noble and distinguished from the descendants of Prophet Harun alayhis salam, and she is more suitable for you.” Thus, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam called Sayyiduna Dihyah al-Kalbi radi Allahu anhu and said to him: “Choose another slave-girl,” and then on the return journey, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam freed her and married her.
Sayyidah Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha prepared her as a bride on the way and presented her to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam considered her emancipation itself as her bridal gift (mahr).
