Hadith 2260

Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A companion asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about ‘azl (withdrawal), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Do you do that? If you do not do it, there is no harm, but whichever soul Allah has decreed to be created, it will surely be created, whether you practice ‘azl or not.”

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadith 2259)

The meaning of ‘azl is to withdraw the private part at the time of ejaculation during intercourse, so that the semen is released outside and pregnancy does not occur.

From this hadith, it is understood that it is as if the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) disliked ‘azl in a certain way, and stated that your action is futile; the soul that is destined to be created will certainly be created even in this situation.

This hadith also establishes the permissibility of asking about such matters which a person is naturally shy to mention, and also that granting children is in the hand of Allah Ta‘ala; the servant knows nothing and neither does he have the authority to create or prevent offspring.

Man and woman are merely means for the propagation of progeny; the Creator is only Allah Ta‘ala. ‘Azl is generally considered disliked (makruh) because it involves cutting off and reducing progeny.

In the present era, the programs of reducing progeny that are ongoing under the name of family planning cannot be deemed permissible based on ‘azl; further details will follow.
