Hadith 2252

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a woman who attracted him. He (peace be upon him) then came to Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was extracting perfume and had women sitting with her. When those women left, he (peace be upon him) fulfilled his desire with her. Then he said: “Whoever among you sees a woman who attracts his heart, let him go to his wife (i.e., fulfill his desire with her), for indeed, his wife has the same as that woman has.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2251)

The fact that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam’s gaze fell upon that woman was by the will of Allah Ta’ala, so that the Ummah may be taught the pure lesson of self-control in such situations. Thus, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam taught the Ummah both verbally and practically that when a man sees a woman, he should not fall into temptation. And it is indeed a reality that Shaytan constantly pursues women, and presents even an unattractive and impure woman as beautiful in the eyes of strangers, so that they may deviate from the path of truth and the straight path (sirat al-mustaqim) and fall into temptation.

In such circumstances, a person should seek refuge with Allah and fulfill his need in a lawful manner, and crush Shaytan and the inciting soul (nafs al-ammarah), lest Shaytan disgrace and humiliate him.

From this hadith, it is also understood that if a man has intercourse (jima‘) with his wife during the day, there is no harm in it, and it is necessary for the wife that if she is engaged in household chores, she should leave everything and respond to her husband’s call without any objection.

There is another hidden benefit in this hadith, which is very important from a medical perspective: that if, for any reason, a man’s desire (shahwah) is aroused, it is not correct to suppress it, otherwise it will harm the human body, manifesting in the form of pimples, discharge (jaryan) and nocturnal emission (ihtilam), and other illnesses. May we be sacrificed for the true guide, the Seal of the Messengers, our master Muhammad bin Abdullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, who granted us such pure teachings and precious principles of health preservation.
