Hadith 2249

Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When any one of you has intercourse with his wife, what is there to prevent him from saying this supplication (i.e., he should recite this supplication at the time of intercourse) «بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ اَللّٰهُمَّ جَنِّبْنَا الشَّيْطَانَ وَجَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْتَنَا» 'In the name of Allah, O Allah, keep us away from Satan and keep Satan away from what You grant us (as a result of this intercourse).' After reciting this supplication, any child that is born to the couple from this intercourse will never be harmed by Satan."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2248)

From this hadith, the recitation of this supplication at the time of intercourse is established. Its benefit is that both husband and wife, as well as the coming soul (the child), will all be protected from the evil of Shaytan. The harm and loss referred to here includes every kind of harm, whether religious or worldly, tangible or intangible.

This hadith shows that Shaytan stays away from those who remember Allah, and he has no power over them. Otherwise, he remains attached to every human at all times and does not separate from him in any state. Therefore, one should never be heedless of the remembrance of Allah in any situation.

Today, many people do not act upon this hadith; most do not even have this supplication memorized. That is why children often turn out to be disrespectful, mischievous, and incompetent.

Even in common parlance, when a child is excessively mischievous, it is said that he is a child born without “Bismillah.”

Therefore, one should be diligent in reciting this supplication. In it is the following of the Sunnah, as well as both religious and worldly benefit. The religious benefit is that the offspring will be righteous and this act will also fall under the category of worship. The worldly benefit is that, by the blessing of this supplication and with Allah’s permission, a person will remain protected from illness and the like.
