Hadith 2248

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married me in Shawwal and consummated the marriage with me in Shawwal. So which of his wives was more fortunate with him than I? And Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) liked that the women among her relatives should be married off in Shawwal.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadith 2247)

The month of Shawwal is a month of Eid happiness; for this reason, it is better to contract marriage (nikah) in it. In the era of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), people used to consider this month as inauspicious. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed nikah in Shawwal and also celebrated the wedding night (shab-e-zifaf) in order to eradicate this notion.

Sayyidah Aisha (radi Allahu anha) says: It is sufficient to refute this false notion that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) married me and consummated the marriage with me in this very month, and I was the most beloved and most favored by him. Although marriage can be performed in any month, on any day or date, if something becomes widespread among disbelievers, sinners, or due to the ignorance of women—without any Shar‘i (legal) evidence—and the public considers it inauspicious, then marriage and celebration should be held in that very month so that this baseless idea is removed from the hearts of the people. According to the Shari‘ah, the month of Shawwal, likewise the months of Muharram or Safar, none are inauspicious; one should contract marriage in these months without hesitation. The belief and concept of “Tairah Tezi” (the inauspiciousness of the thirteenth) is entirely baseless and an invention of ignorant women.
