It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a yellow color on Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) (i.e., the color of saffron on his body or clothes), so he said: "What is this yellowness?" He replied: "I have married a woman for a date-stone's weight of gold (i.e., gold equal to the weight of a date-stone, which is approximately three dirhams)." He said: "May Allah bless you. Give a wedding feast, even if it is with only one goat."

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadith 2240)
Walima refers to the meal that is offered by the husband after the wedding night, and it is Sunnah (recommended practice). The primary reason is that in it, a goat is slaughtered; if one does not have the means for that, then walima is also valid with sattu (roasted barley flour), barley, or sweets. In short, walima can be done with any food. Some scholars have declared walima to be obligatory (wajib). In the hadith, it is also mentioned in the imperative form «(أَؤْلِمْ)», and an imperative (amr) indicates obligation (wujub) unless there is some evidence that takes it from obligation to recommendation (mustahabb) or desirability (mandub). From this hadith, one can perceive the attachment, affection, and love of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam for the noble companions (Sahabah kiram). When he saw something new, he asked why it was so; also, that applying color or saffron (za‘faran) is prohibited for men. Here, when saffron was seen applied, it must have been from staying with the bride or from the bride’s clothes. From this, it is understood that it is permissible for the bride to apply ubtan (a traditional paste) and similar things, but not for the groom. Giving gold in the amount of three dirhams as mahr (dower) is also established from this hadith, as is congratulating the groom, and also holding a walima, for which there is no fixed limit or quantity. The groom should hold a walima according to his means and capacity, without any difficulty, and it is not permissible to show off, display ostentation, or grandeur in the walima. Goodness and blessing are only in simplicity and in following the matters of Islam.
