Hadith 2239

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us this sermon for need and necessity: «اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ يا إِنَّ الْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ ............. That is, all praise or indeed all praise is for Allah alone, we praise Him and seek His help, and we ask His forgiveness and pardon, and we seek refuge with Allah from the evil of our own souls. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomever Allah lets go astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger. Then he would recite these three verses: « ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ﴾ » [آل عمران: 102/3], « ﴿يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ نَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا وَبَثَّ مِنْهُمَا رِجَالًا كَثِيرًا وَنِسَاءً وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ الَّذِي تَسَاءَلُونَ بِهِ وَالْأَرْحَامَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيبًا﴾ » [النساء: 1/4] «﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَقُولُوا قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا ٭ يُصْلِحْ لَكُمْ أَعْمَالَكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ فَازَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا﴾» [الاحزاب: 70/33 -71], then he would state his need (that is, after this, he would conduct the proposal and acceptance of marriage).

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2238)

In this hadith, there is evidence for reciting this sermon (khutbah) and the three verses during the marriage sermon (khutbah al-nikah). However, this sermon is not exclusive to marriage; rather, it should be recited at every need and occasion, whether it is the Friday sermon (khutbah al-jumu‘ah), the ‘Eid sermon, or for admonition and advice. The Ahl al-Zahir consider this sermon obligatory, but the rest of the scholars of the ummah have deemed it sunnah (prophetic practice) and recommended (mustahabb). If the sermon is not recited and there is only the offer and acceptance (ijab wa qubul), with witnesses (shahid) and a guardian (wali) present, and the offer and acceptance take place with their consent, then the marriage (nikah) will still be valid, because in multiple narrations the sermon is not mentioned. As in the previous hadith of Sayyiduna Sahl ibn Sa‘d radi Allahu anhu, it is simply stated: “Go, I have given her to you in marriage,” and the sermon is not mentioned.

And Allah knows best.
