Hadith 2238

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A woman came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said that she had gifted herself to Allah and His Messenger (this was an allusion for marriage). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “I have no need of women now.” A companion said: (If you have no need) then marry her to me. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Give her a garment as dowry.” He said: I have no other garment. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Give her something, even if it is an iron ring.” The narrator said: He also expressed his inability for that. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Do you know anything from the Qur’an?” He said: Such and such surahs I know. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Go, I have married her to you in exchange for the Qur’an you know.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2237)

From this authentic hadith, it is understood that a garment, an iron ring, and the teaching and memorization of the Qur'an can be given as a dowry (mahr). If this were not permissible, then why would the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) inquire about it, and why would he establish the right of mahr solely on teaching the Qur'an? From this, it is also understood that it is permissible to fix anything beneficial as mahr, and even the most trivial thing can be set as mahr, such as a garment or an iron ring, which have little value.

This also refutes those who say that mahr must be in the form of money or something that has monetary value. From this hadith, it is also established that a woman may propose marriage to someone and present herself for marriage.
