Hadith 2213

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "None of you should give a proposal over the proposal of his Muslim brother, nor should anyone bargain over the bargain of his brother until he permits him."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2210 to 2213)

In the narration of Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir radi Allahu anhu, it is stated: "Until the messenger (of the proposal) leaves him," meaning that if the first proposal is broken off, then it is permissible to give a proposal to the second person.

The prohibition of giving a proposal over another proposal, or buying something that a Muslim brother has already bought, or bidding over his purchase, are among the best golden principles of Islam, so that pulling and tugging, resentment and rivalry, enmity and hostility do not arise among one another.

The majority of scholars have declared giving a proposal over another proposal to be haram (forbidden), therefore one should avoid it. However, when it becomes known that the first engagement has been broken off, then seeking the relationship and giving a proposal is correct and permissible.

And Allah knows best.
