أَخْبَرَنَا قَبِيصَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَاصِمٍ الْأَحْوَلِ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْمُزَنِي، عَنْ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ أَنَّهُ خَطَبَ امْرَأَةً مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "اذْهَبْ، فَانْظُرْ إِلَيْهَا، فَإِنَّهُ أَجْدَرُ أَنْ يُؤْدَمَ بَيْنَكُمَا".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he proposed marriage to a woman from the Ansar, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and look at her, for this will increase love and harmony between you both."
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2208)
It is permissible to look at the woman whom one intends to marry at the time of engagement, as is established from the aforementioned hadith, and this is the position of Imam Shafi‘i, Imam Ahmad, Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahumullah, and all the scholars of hadith.
Imam Malik rahimahullah said: If the woman gives permission, then it is correct to look at her at the time of engagement, otherwise not.
It is narrated in Sahih Muslim: Another companion came to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said that he had married an Ansari woman. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked, “Did you see her?” He replied, “No.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “Go and look at her, for there is something in the eyes of the women of the Ansar.”
From this too, it is established that it is recommended (mustahabb) to look at the woman whom one intends to marry, and what is meant by looking is to look at the face and hands, as is mentioned in the chapter of Sahih Muslim: «كِتَاب النِّكَاحِ، بَابُ نَدْبِ النَّظَرِ إِلَى وَجْهِ الْمَرْأَةِ وَكَفَّيْهَا لِمَنْ يُرِيدُ تَزَوُّجَهَا.». And if he is not able to look himself, then he may rely on the observation of the women of the household, such as the mother, sister, etc., but looking himself is a means of protection from many tribulations that may arise later.
