أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ، أَنْبَأَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ، أَخْبَرَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ سَعْدَ بْنَ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، يَقُولُ: "لَقَدْ رَدَّ ذَلِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ، وَلَوْ أَجَازَ لَهُ التَّبَتُّلَ، لَاخْتَصَيْنَا".
Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not permit Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz’oon (may Allah be pleased with him) to separate himself from women. If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had permitted him, we would have made ourselves eunuchs (so that we would not even think of women).
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2203)
By "tabattul" is meant suppressing one's desires and staying away from women, and similarly, a woman staying away from men; likewise, it refers to castration.
Islam does not permit this, which people call asceticism and wandering dervish-hood, and adopting a life of celibacy. The Christians also did the same and called it monasticism, that is, severing ties from the world, women, and desires. But Islam and the Prophet of Islam said: «لا رهبانية فى الإسلام.» Today’s so-called spiritual guides, ascetics, monks, and practitioners, by pretending not to marry, violate the honor of others’ daughters-in-law, daughters, and sisters; in the name of spiritual practice, they seek pleasure from women in seclusion, and by turning away from the teachings of Islam, they tear apart the Shari‘ah. The lawless shaykh does not even spit, nor does he miss an opportunity in darkness or light.
May Allah Ta‘ala protect everyone from such robbers of religion and faith.
