Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadith 2200)

Nikah (marriage) in the linguistic sense means intercourse, and in the legal (shar‘i) terminology, it refers to that contract by which a man becomes the owner of a woman, and every kind of enjoyment (istimta‘) with the woman becomes permissible, and that woman becomes forbidden (haram) for any other man as long as this contract remains in place.

In this hadith, there is encouragement for nikah and marriage, and for the person who, despite having the ability and means, does not marry, there is a severe warning: «ليس منا» meaning, "Such a person is not from among us," i.e., not from among the Muslims. So, is such a person excluded from the religion (milah)? There is discussion regarding this, and the correct view is that he will not be excluded from the religion of Islam, but this is not the way of the Muslims. Similarly, there is the hadith «فَمَنْ رَغِبَ عَنْ سُنَّتِيْ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّيْ» which will be mentioned ahead.
