Hadith 2198

Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "I saw in a dream a black, disheveled-haired woman who left Madinah and settled in Mahya‘ah. I interpreted it as the epidemic of Madinah being transferred to the settlement called Mahya‘ah."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2197)

The settlement named Mahya‘ah is nowadays called Juhfah; Ghadir Khumm is also located there, and the climate and air of this place remain unhealthy to this day. It is a fact that when the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) migrated from Makkah to Madinah, several noble Companions were affected by this epidemic; among them were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Bilal (radi Allahu anhuma) and others. The disbelievers also thought that the fever and epidemic of Madinah would weaken the Muslim emigrants.

When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw this situation, he supplicated to Allah, saying: “O Allah! Transfer this epidemic from Madinah to somewhere else.” Thus, the supplication of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was accepted in the presence of the Lord of all worlds, and he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was shown in a dream that the epidemic had moved to Mahya‘ah. In this way, Madinah al-Munawwarah became Ṭābah or Madinah Ṭayyibah (the pure and wholesome city).

And Allah knows best.
