It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: "Once I was sleeping and I saw in a dream that people were being presented before me, and they were wearing shirts. Some had shirts reaching up to their chests, and some had shirts reaching below that. Then Umar bin Al-Khattab was brought before me, and the shirt on his body was so long that he was dragging it." The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is the interpretation of this? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It refers to religion."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2186 to 2188)
From this hadith, the virtue of Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu is established; among those who were not seen (by the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in the dream), his faith (iman) was the strongest, most firm, and greatest. And it is a fact that the progress, grandeur, and ascendancy that Islam achieved during his era is manifest and well-known.
From this, it is also understood that people are at varying and differing levels and ranks in terms of religion and faith, and that faith (iman) increases and decreases.
Allamah Qastallani rahimahullah writes: In this hadith, there is a profound and eloquent analogy in which religion (din) is likened to a shirt (qamis); the shirt covers a person's body, similarly, religion will cover him (from sin and) from the Hellfire. In this is also evidence for the increase and decrease of faith, as is understood from the analogy of religion with a shirt; just as those who wear shirts differ in the extent to which they wear them, likewise, people have varying degrees in religion as well. From this, the increase and decrease of faith is established.
Among the Companions, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu is the most virtuous; there is consensus on this.
This hadith does not establish that Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu is superior to him, because among those seen in the dream, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu is not mentioned.
