Abdur Rahman bin A’ish says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: “I saw my Lord in the best of forms. The Lord of the worlds said: ‘What are the highest assembly (the angels of the heavens) disputing about?’ I said: ‘O my Lord! You know best.’ He said: Then my Lord placed His hand between my shoulders, the coolness of which I felt in my chest, and I was given knowledge of the earth and the heavens.” Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited this verse: « ﴿وَكَذَلِكَنُرِي ....﴾ الخ»[انعام: 75/6]

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2185)
If this hadith is considered authentic, then it establishes that the Lord of Majesty (Rabb Dhul-Jalal) manifests Himself (tajalli) in dreams for the Prophets, not for just anyone. And what is meant by “knowledge” here is that at that moment, knowledge of what is happening in the world of the unseen (alam al-malakut) and the worldly realm (alam al-dunya) is granted—not that knowledge of the unseen (ilm al-ghayb) until the Day of Resurrection is acquired.
The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would only know those matters of the unseen which were conveyed to him through revelation (wahy) and inspiration (ilham); otherwise, the implication would be the invalidation of this verse: « ﴿قُلْلَايَعْلَمُمَنْفِيالسَّمَاوَاتِوَالْأَرْضِالْغَيْبَإِلَّااللّٰهُ﴾ [النمل : 65]» Translation: “Say: None in the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except Allah.”
Similarly: « ﴿وَمَايَعْلَمُجُنُودَرَبِّكَإِلَّاهُوَ﴾ [المدثر : 31]» Translation: “And how many armies does your Lord have? Only He knows.”
And «﴿وَلَوْكُنْتُأَعْلَمُالْغَيْبَلَاسْتَكْثَرْتُمِنَالْخَيْرِ﴾ [الأعراف : 188]» Translation: “And if I had knowledge of the unseen, I would have acquired much good for myself.”
And many other such verses negate absolute knowledge of the unseen for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
