Hadith 2185

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Razin Uqayli (may Allah be pleased with him), he heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A dream is on the leg of a bird (and remains there) until it is interpreted, then when it is interpreted, it happens as it is interpreted." That is, just as when the bird's leg moves and it falls from its leg, so is the interpretation of a dream.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2184)

From this hadith, it is understood that one should not seek the interpretation of dreams from just anyone, lest he say something distressing and it comes to pass as such. As has been mentioned previously, a dream should only be related to a sincere well-wisher and someone who possesses knowledge of dream interpretation (ta‘bir al-ru’ya), who has sound judgment and upright understanding.

The knowledge of dream interpretation is granted by Allah Ta‘ala to select individuals. My respected father (hafizahullah) narrated an incident about seeking interpretation from an ignorant friend: A king saw in a dream that all his teeth had fallen out. When he asked for its interpretation, someone said, “O king, all your relatives and close ones will die.” The king became angry and had that person killed. He then asked another person for the interpretation, who was somewhat clever.

He said, “You will have a long life and will outlive all of them.”

The meaning was the same, but the manner of expression pleased the king, and he rewarded him.

An example of this will come ahead at 2200.

And Allah knows best.
