Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a marfu‘ manner: “Whoever lies in his dream (i.e., says he saw something which he did not see), he will be ordered on the Day of Resurrection to tie a knot in a grain of barley.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2180 to 2182)
It is impossible to tie a knot in a barley grain. In some narrations, it is mentioned: He will be ordered to tie a knot in a barley grain, and he will not be able to do so, and this will be a very great punishment. Therefore, one should avoid narrating false dreams. Allamah Badi’ al-Zaman rahimahullah writes in Sharh Tirmidhi: Since dreams are a domain of reports of the unseen, and especially a righteous dream is a branch of prophethood, thus to fabricate lies in this is as if it is a branch of the false claim of prophethood. This is the very reason for the warning (wa‘id) mentioned in this regard. And some have said: The reason for the severe warning is that in a false dream, lying is ascribed to Allah Ta‘ala, and the specification of the branch (sh‘ubah) for tying the knot is because its substance and that of barley are very close, as if it is an indication that this is the punishment for your lack of awareness, that the knot of barley has been put around your neck.
