أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ مَخْلَدِ بْنِ حُسَيْنٍ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: "الرُّؤْيَا ثَلَاثٌ: فَالرُّؤْيَا الْحَسَنَةُ بُشْرَى مِنْ اللَّهِ، وَالرُّؤْيَا تَحْزِينٌ مِنْ الشَّيْطَانِ، وَالرُّؤْيَا مِمَّا يُحَدِّثُ بِهِ الْإِنْسَانُ نَفْسَهُ، فَإِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمْ مَا يَكْرَهُهُ، فَلَا يُحَدِّثْ بِهِ، وَلْيَقُمْ، وَلْيُصَلِّ".
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Dreams are of three types: Good dreams are glad tidings from Allah Almighty, frightening dreams are distressing dreams from Satan, and those dreams which a person thinks about in his thoughts and imaginations, he sees in his dreams. Therefore, if any of you sees a bad dream, he should not mention it and should get up and offer prayer."

From this hadith, it is understood that upon seeing a bad dream, one should begin to perform prayer (salah) in order to seek protection from its evil and distress.
