Hadith 2179

Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman says: I used to see such dreams that would make me ill, so I mentioned this to Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: I too used to see such dreams that would make me ill, until I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A good dream is from Allah, so when any of you sees something he likes, he should thank Allah for it, and he should relate that dream only to the one whom he loves. And if he sees a dream that he dislikes, he should spit lightly three times on his left side and seek refuge with Allah from its evil (i.e., say «أَعُوْذُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنْ شَرِّهَا»), and he should not mention that dream to anyone at all; that dream will never harm him."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2177 to 2179)

Every person, due to various causes, sees all kinds of dreams, both good and bad.
According to an authentic hadith, upon seeing a good dream, one should thank Allah Ta’ala, and if one sees a bad or frightening dream, one should turn to the other side, spit lightly three times to the left, and seek refuge with Allah from Satan, that is, say «أَعُوْدُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْمِ» or «أَعُوْذُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنْ شَرِّهَا».
In Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi, it is mentioned that at the time of a frightening dream, anxiety, or distress, one should recite: «أَعُوْذُ بِكَلِمَاتَ اللّٰهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَعِقَابِهِ وَشَرِّ عِبَادِهِ وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِيْنِ وَأَنْ يَحْضُرُوْنِ (Translation: “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the evil suggestions of the devils, and from their presence near me.”) or begin to pray (salah), and remain assured that the dream will not harm him in any way. And one should not relate a bad dream to anyone, for it is possible that the interpreter may be ignorant and cause him even greater distress.
And Allah knows best.
