Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to visit an Ansari companion who was ill, and there was a stream running through the garden. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you have water from the night in a water-skin, then bring it, otherwise we will drink directly from the stream."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2159) From this hadith, it is understood that drinking water directly from a river or pond by putting one's mouth to it is permissible. In the narration of Sahih Bukhari, it is mentioned that this Ansari companion had water in a water-skin, so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam drank from it because it is cooler. In this hadith, the act of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam visiting his companions to inquire about their well-being is a perfect example of humility and excellent character.
