Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2153 to 2156)

It is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari that Mu‘ammar or someone else said: Ikhtinath means to drink water by putting the mouth directly on the waterskin (mashk).

From these ahadith, it is understood that drinking water directly from the waterskin by putting the mouth on it is not permissible, regardless of the reasoning. In one narration, it is mentioned that a person drank water from the waterskin by putting his mouth on it, and a baby snake entered his stomach. After that, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam strictly forbade drinking water directly from the waterskin. Furthermore, there is also the risk of choking or something getting stuck in the throat in this manner. For this reason, among the etiquettes of drinking water is that a person should sit and drink water from a cup or glass, taking three breaths.

And Allah knows best.
