Hadith 2150

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not make nabidh (fermented drink) by mixing fresh and dried dates together, and likewise do not mix grapes and dates together to make nabidh. You may make nabidh from each fruit separately."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2149)

Mixing grapes and dates, or mixing unripe and ripe dates to make a drink (nabidh) is referred to here. Nabidh is permissible provided that it does not become intoxicating, but mixing such blended ingredients has been prohibited, on the assumption that intoxication may develop more quickly in it.

According to Imam Malik and Ahmad rahimahum Allah, such a mixture is unlawful even if intoxication has not developed in it, as in the above hadith there is an absolute prohibition and forbiddance.

Most scholars have said that this mixture becomes unlawful only when intoxication develops in it.

Imam Nawawi rahimahullah has said: The prohibition in the aforementioned hadith is one of dislike (nahi tanzihi), not of absolute unlawfulness (nahi tahrimi). End of his statement.

It is best to avoid that which is prohibited in the hadith, whether the prohibition is one of dislike or of absolute unlawfulness.

Similarly, there is the narration of Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade making nabidh by mixing two things.

This has already been mentioned in the previous chapter; also see: [نسائي 5568] and [أحمد 299/5].
