Hadith 2148

Abu’l-Hakam Imran bin al-Harith said: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), or I said that I heard from him, that he was asked about the drink of the earthenware jar, so he replied: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade making nabidh (fermented drink) in gourds and in tanned (water skins). I asked Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he also gave an answer similar to that of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Whoever wishes to declare unlawful that which Allah and His Messenger have declared unlawful, or he said: Whoever wishes to make unlawful that which Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful, then let him consider nabidh unlawful. The narrator said: And my brother narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade making nabidh in earthenware jars, gourds, lacquered vessels, tar-coated vessels, and from fresh and dried (dates and cooked) dates.

Brief Explanation
(Explanation of Hadith 2147)

From these narrations, it is understood that making nabidh (a drink prepared by soaking dates, raisins, etc. in water) in the aforementioned vessels—namely jar, dubba’, naqir, and muzaffat—has been prohibited, as has already been mentioned previously. Similarly, it is prohibited to make a drink or nabidh by mixing two types of fruits, because there is a risk that it may lead to intoxication. Before the prohibition of alcohol, the Arabs greatly liked the wine made from both unripe and ripe dates. Allah Ta’ala made it unlawful. Further details will come ahead. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma declared nabidh to be unlawful; this was out of precaution and piety.
