Saeed bin Jubair said: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the nabidh (fermented drink) made in a jug (or a small container), so he replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has declared it forbidden. After that, I met Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and informed him about the statement of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), so Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Abu Abdur Rahman has spoken absolutely correctly.

In the beginning, when alcohol was prohibited, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade making nabidh and drinks in those vessels in which alcohol was made, because there was a fear that intoxication might occur in them. Later, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) permitted making drinks from grapes, dates, etc., in every kind of vessel, whether the vessels were made of clay, stone, or leather.
