Abdullah bin Dailami narrated from his father that his father or someone from his tribe asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! You know from where we have come and to whom we have come, so who is our guardian? He replied: "Your guardian is Allah and His Messenger." They said: O Messenger of Allah! We are people of grapes and wine, and Allah Almighty has forbidden wine, so what should we do with dried grapes (raisins)? He said: "Dry them and make raisins from them." They asked: What should we do with them? He said: "Put them in a leather waterskin and prepare its drink at noon, and after preparing the drink in the evening, drink it with the midday meal, and when the time for the Asr prayer passes over it twice, then you may drink it until it becomes wine."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2144)
When grape juice or raisin syrup is kept in a leather waterskin, it does not ferment quickly. However, if an earthenware pot or pitcher is not washed every day, the syrup kept in it ferments and becomes intoxicating more quickly. Similarly, if a drink or syrup made from dates or grapes is kept in such a vessel for several days, it becomes intoxicating. Therefore, one should abstain from drinking it.
The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would drink such syrup only as long as it had not fermented. If its taste changed or its smell altered, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would never drink it.
