Hadith 2136

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I forbid you from drinking even a little of that intoxicant, the excessive use of which causes intoxication.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2135)

Allamah Waheeduz-Zaman rahimahullah writes: Some people have said that drinking a small amount of wine that is not made from grapes is permissible, as long as it does not intoxicate. If one continues to drink until intoxication occurs, then only the last sip, with which intoxication was produced, is considered unlawful, and the first sip is permissible. This is mere trickery, trickery indeed. In reality, intoxication is not produced by the last sip alone, but rather by the combined effect of all the previous and subsequent sips; therefore, all of it is unlawful.

(End of his statement.)

These are some of the legal sophistries of those who consider wine to be lawful, whereas the hadith of the Messenger sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is clear and explicit that whatever causes intoxication is unlawful in both small and large quantities.

Its details have already been discussed under (2134), and Imam Nasa’i rahimahullah has also stated similarly in [نسائي 5616].
