Hadith 2135

Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me and Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) towards Yemen and said: "Drink anything you wish, but do not drink anything intoxicating, for every intoxicant is forbidden."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2134)

In the narration of al-Nasa’i (5602), it is stated: Sayyiduna Mu’adh radi Allahu anhu submitted, “O Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam! You are sending us to a land where the people drink wine in abundance, so what should we drink?” Then the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Drink anything, but do not drink that which causes intoxication.”

This means that nabidh (fermented drink) of grapes and date syrup, etc., may be consumed as long as they do not become intoxicating.
