Hadith 2134

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about "bit‘" (a drink made from honey), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every intoxicating drink is forbidden."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2133)

In the narration of al-Nasa’i, it is mentioned: The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was asked about “bit’” and “mirz.” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “What are these?” It was said that bit’ is (an intoxicant made from) honey and mirz is a drink made from barley. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Whatever causes intoxication is forbidden.”

It is understood from this that no matter what the name is, and no matter what substance the intoxicant is extracted from, whatever causes intoxication is forbidden.

In one hadith it is stated: «كل مسكر حرام و كل مسكر خمر» [بخاري 4343] , [نسائي 5588] , meaning every intoxicating thing is forbidden and every intoxicant is khamr (wine), that is, whatever causes intoxication is khamr, regardless of its name.

Khamr is that which removes the intellect.
