Hadith 2126

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was serving wine to people in the house of Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) when the prohibition of wine was revealed, and (the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him) had a proclaimer announce (the prohibition). So Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Go and see what this announcement is. So I went outside (and saw) that the proclaimer was announcing that wine has been made unlawful. Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: Go and pour it out. (So they poured out all the wine) which began to flow in the streets of Madinah. In those days, it was date wine. Some people said: Many people were martyred in such a state that wine was still in their stomachs. Then Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: «لَيْسَ عَلَى الَّذِيْنَ .....» [المائده: 93/5], meaning: Those who believe and do righteous deeds, there is no sin upon them for what they consumed before, when they feared Allah and believed... etc.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2125)

Many rulings are derived from this hadith. The prohibition of wine was revealed gradually; this was a kindness and mercy from Allah Ta’ala for those who drank wine. However, when the prohibition was revealed, the noble Companions (Sahabah) abandoned it completely despite being accustomed to it. Here, it is Sayyiduna Abu Talhah radi Allahu anhu who commands that all the wine be poured away. This is a supreme example of obedience and submission, of following and surrendering; once they heard the command, they knew nothing except “We hear and we obey” (sam‘ina wa ata‘na). May Allah be pleased with them and grant them His pleasure.

Although at that time wine was made from dates, this ruling applies to every intoxicating wine, regardless of what it is made from.

Those who drank wine before its prohibition and passed away in that state, this later ruling will not cause them any harm. Furthermore, faith (iman) and piety (taqwa) save a person from Allah Ta’ala’s punishment and torment.

In this hadith, it is mentioned that wine was poured out onto the streets and alleys. Perhaps the intention of the noble Companions was that everyone should become aware of its prohibition, because it is not permissible to throw something in the road or street that would cause harm to passersby. The lowest sign of faith is to remove something harmful from the path.

And Allah knows best.
