Hadith 2125

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: On the night when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was taken on the Mi'raj, two cups were presented before him in (the city of) Ilya (Bayt al-Maqdis): one of wine and one of milk. He (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at them and took the cup of milk. Upon this, Jibreel (peace be upon him) said: All praise is for Allah who guided you to the natural disposition. If you had taken the cup of wine, your ummah would have gone astray.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2124)

In this hadith, the word "fitrah" (innate nature) has appeared, regarding which the scholars have mentioned several meanings.

By "fitrah" is meant the fitrah of Islam.

Some have said: it refers to the original creation (asl al-khilqah) upon which man was created «﴿فِطْرَتَ اللّٰهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا﴾ [الروم : 30]», while others have said: it means steadfastness upon the religion, etc.

Maulana Raz rahimahullah writes: Milk is the natural (fitri) nourishment for humans, and wine is the root of all evils.

The very reason for its prohibition is that by drinking it, the intellect is lost, and the one who drinks it commits crimes and evil deeds; for this reason, it has been declared unlawful (haram) in every quantity, whether little or much.

From this hadith, the event of Isra and Mi'raj is established, which occurred before the Hijrah, in which the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam led all the prophets in prayer at Bayt al-Maqdis, journeyed through the heavens, and the prayer (salah) was made obligatory.
