Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Worship the Most Merciful, spread (promote) peace, feed (others), you will enter Paradise.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2116 to 2118)

The aforementioned narration is found in Tirmidhi in this form, and in Ibn Majah there is this addition: “O people! Spread peace (salam), feed (others), maintain family ties, and pray at night when people are sleeping; you will enter Paradise in peace.”

That is, whoever acts upon the spreading of salam, feeding of food, maintaining of kinship ties (silat al-arham), and praying at night while people are asleep, will certainly attain Paradise, because all these etiquettes and principles are those of happiness and good fortune.

By spreading salam is meant saying “as-salamu alaykum,” and the most complete way of doing so is that upon meeting one’s Muslim brother, one should say “as-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.” Initiating salam is Sunnah, and responding to it is obligatory (wajib).

In the aforementioned narration, all three matters are mentioned in the imperative form, which outwardly indicates obligation (wujub): that is, giving salam, feeding others, and worshipping and obeying the Lord—all these matters hold the rank of obligation. There is great reward and glad tidings of Paradise for fulfilling them, and neglecting them can result in being counted among those who abandon the Sunnah and being distanced from Paradise. May Allah grant everyone the ability to perform these righteous deeds.

Amin.
