Hadith 2113

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of the toilet, and food was presented to him, and it was said: "Will you not perform ablution?" The narrator said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Am I going to pray that I should perform ablution?" Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Among the narrators in the chain is Sa'id bin Al-Huwairith.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2112)

The meaning of this hadith is that I only have to perform a little prayer for which I would perform ablution (wudu), therefore it is understood that eating and drinking without ablution is permissible. However, there is no harm in washing the mouth and hands; in fact, washing the hands before eating is a Sunnah.
