Hadith 2090

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said during the Battle of Khaybar: "Whoever eats this plant (i.e., garlic), let him not come to our mosques at all."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2089)

The odor present in raw garlic and onions was intensely disliked by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). From this hadith, it is understood that one should not go to the mosque after eating raw garlic or onions. Similarly, it is prohibited to bring any foul-smelling thing into the mosque, or to go to the mosque after eating or drinking something with a bad odor. The reason is clear: people will be troubled by its smell, and moreover, the mosque is a pure and sacred place where Allah is remembered.

Nowadays, smoking bidis or cigarettes—which is haram—and then coming to the mosque is an even worse and greater violation.

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “The angels are also harmed and distressed by those foul-smelling things which cause harm and distress to human beings.”

However, it is permissible to cook onions or garlic and add them to curry, and to eat them, provided that by boiling or cooking, their odor is eliminated.

And Allah knows best.
