It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Vinegar is the best condiment."
Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2084 to 2086)
"Adam" or "Adem" in the Arabic language refers to a sauce or gravy with which bread is moistened and eaten. In these two hadiths, the lifestyle of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, his cheerful disposition, and humility are evident, as well as an indication of straitened circumstances and lack of abundance.
He comes home and asks for food; nothing is found except a few pieces of bread and some vinegar with water. He partakes of this, and sometimes eats bread with salt as well, yet not a single wrinkle appears on his blessed forehead. Happily, he eats whatever is available and expresses gratitude to Allah. Not only this, but he also praises this blessing of Allah (the vinegar), saying that it is an excellent condiment. There is a lesson in this for those who, over the lack or excess of gravy, become angry with their wives, daughters, and daughters-in-law, quarrel, and even throw away the food.
See how beautiful and practical was the conduct and lifestyle of our beloved Prophet, and how worthy of emulation and example it was.
Fidahu abi wa ummi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam taslīman kathīran.
It is said that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam praised vinegar for two reasons: firstly, vinegar is prepared with little expense and does not require much in the way of ingredients; once made, it suffices for a long time.
Secondly, from a medical perspective, vinegar expels phlegm.
From the aforementioned hadith, the love of the narrators of hadith for the Sunnah is also evident, as when Sayyiduna Jabir and Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan radi Allahu anhuma heard this, vinegar became the most beloved to them.
May Allah Ta'ala grant all of us the ability to love that which was beloved to our beloved Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
