Hadith 2080

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A believer eats in one intestine, and a disbeliever eats in seven intestines."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2078 to 2080)

The meaning of the hadith is that a believer eats little, while a disbeliever eats much.

Imam Nawawi rahimahullah said: In another narration, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said this when he accepted the invitation of a disbeliever, and that person drank the milk of seven goats. Then, the next day, when he became Muslim, he drank only the milk of one goat and could not finish the milk of the second goat.

Qadi Iyad said: This hadith pertains specifically to this particular individual (and will not be applicable to others, and Allah knows best).

And the physicians have said: Every person has seven intestines: one stomach, three small intestines (thin), and three large intestines, so the disbeliever, due to greed, wishes to fill all of them, whereas for the believer, filling just one is sufficient.

And some have said that by “seven intestines” are meant seven evil traits: greed and covetousness, hope and corruption, envy, obesity, and avarice, etc. (Wahidi).

This hadith also alludes to the fact that a believer should eat according to his need, not for pleasure and luxury, but rather reserve pleasure and luxury for the Hereafter.
