Hadith 2075

Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh Khuzai (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should honor his guest, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should treat his neighbor well, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day must speak good words or remain silent.”

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2073 to 2075)

From these hadiths, it is understood that the sign of faith and the qualities of a believer are that he honors his neighbor, regardless of which tribe or religion he belongs to, and refrains from useless talk and nonsense, and practices hospitality, which is a high example of good character. Furthermore, hospitality is for three days; beyond this, the guest should not become a burden on the host, but rather should make his own arrangements, as is explicitly mentioned in the narrations of Bukhari and Ibn Majah.

That is why, in the aforementioned narration as well, it is stated that if the host entertains the guest for more than three days, it is considered charity, and the guest should avoid this.

Subhan Allah! How beautiful is the system of justice in Islam: first, it teaches hospitality, then it informs the guest not to become a burden on the host.
