Hadith 2071

Iyas bin Abi Salamah said: My father narrated a hadith to me and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saw Busar bin Ra’i al-‘Ir eating with his left hand. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Eat with your right hand.” He replied: “I cannot.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “May you never be able to (if you are lying),” and the narrator said: After that, his right hand could never reach his mouth.

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadiths 2069 to 2071)

This was an immediate and dreadful punishment from Allah Ta’ala for rejecting the command of the Messenger.

From this, it is understood that opposing the Sunnah carries a severe punishment, which Allah Ta’ala can also inflict in this world as a sign and lesson for others, as is mentioned in the Noble Qur’an: «﴿فَلْيَحْذَرِ الَّذِينَ يُخَالِفُونَ عَنْ أَمْرِهِ أَنْ تُصِيبَهُمْ فِتْنَةٌ أَوْ يُصِيبَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ﴾ [النور: 63]» Translation: “Those who oppose his (the Prophet’s, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) command should beware lest a trial afflict them or a painful punishment befall them (in the Hereafter).”

From this hadith, it is understood that food should be eaten with the right hand.

Our Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to perform every action with the right hand—eating, drinking, dressing, even beginning to comb his hair and putting on shoes from the right side.

This is why, in Saudi Arabia, vehicles and traffic are on the right side.

This hadith also proves that it is permissible to supplicate against a person who opposes the Sunnah.

The aforementioned person, Basar, is said to have been a hypocrite, and out of arrogance and pride, he said, “I cannot eat with my right hand.” Therefore, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Now you will not be able to eat with your right hand.”

This supplication was immediately accepted in the court of Allah, and Basar’s right hand became paralyzed forever, becoming a sign and lesson for others.

May Allah Ta’ala make all of us followers of the Sunnah and protect us from opposing and neglecting the Sunnah of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Ameen.
