Hadith 2062

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished eating or drinking, he would recite this supplication: «اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ حَمْدًا كَثِيْرًا طَيِّبًا مُبَارَكًا فِيْهِ غَيْرَ مَكْفُوْرٍ وَّلَا مُوَدَّعٍ وَلَا مُسْتَغْنًي (عَنْهُ) رَبَّنَا» meaning, "All praise is for Allah, such praise that is pure and full of blessings. We cannot sufficiently thank You for this food; may it never depart from us permanently, and we cannot do without it (i.e., we cannot live without eating). O our Lord! Accept our supplication."

Brief Explanation
(Commentary on Hadith 2061)

Multiple supplications (du‘a) after eating have been transmitted from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, among which is the supplication mentioned above. Similarly, there is another supplication: «اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْ أَطْعَمَ وَسَقٰي وَسَوَّغَهُ وَجَعَلَ لَهُ مَخْرَجَا Translation: “All praise is due to Allah who fed (us), gave (us) drink, granted (us) the strength to digest the food, and made a way for its waste to exit.”

Apart from this, whatever supplication is established with an authentic chain of narration, one should certainly supplicate as an expression of gratitude to Allah.

Allah Ta‘ala’s statement is: «﴿لَئِنْ شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ وَلَئِنْ كَفَرْتُمْ إِنَّ عَذَابِي لَشَدِيدٌ﴾ [إبراهيم : 7]» Translation: “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you (in favor); but if you are ungrateful, indeed, My punishment is severe.”
