Brief Explanation
(Hadith Explanation 2057)

It is narrated in Sahih Bukhari that Sayyiduna Umar bin Abi Salamah radi Allahu anhu said: I was a child under the care of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and during meals my hand would wander all around the dish. Therefore, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said to me: “O boy! Say ‘Bismillah’ (In the name of Allah), eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you.”

From this hadith, it is understood that one should begin eating by mentioning the name of Allah.

Imam Nawawi rahimahullah said: It is recommended (mustahabb) to say the complete “Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem,” and if one only says “Bismillah,” that is also sufficient. If one forgets to say it at the beginning, then upon remembering, one should say «بِسْمَ اللّٰهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ», as will be mentioned in another narration further ahead.

Saying “Bismillah” and eating with the right hand is obligatory (wajib), as will be discussed further. Similarly, eating from what is in front of and near oneself is among the Islamic etiquettes of eating, which is a very refined and excellent practice.

Taking a morsel or food from in front of others or from elsewhere is considered disrespectful and improper.
